The Legal Pause: Episode 7 – When “Just Keep Going” Stops Working in Law

In Episode 7 of The Legal Pause, Nick Gallagher, CEO of The Solicitors’ Charity, is joined by Richard Martin, CEO of the Mindful Business Charter, for an honest and thoughtful conversation about burnout, workplace culture, and the realities of “always on” working within the legal profession.

Drawing on his own dramatic experience of mental health breakdown and recovery following a successful legal career in London. Richard reflects on how the effects of stress and anxiety from inhumane working can quietly build over time – often long before people recognise the warning signs themselves and then sadly lead to sudden burnout.

When a stressful working life quietly becomes normal

A key theme throughout the episode is how easily high levels of unrelenting work, leading to stress, can become normalised within legal life. Long hours, constant responsiveness, emotionally demanding work and the pressure to keep performing can gradually affect confidence, wellbeing and relationships without individuals always recognising the impact.

Richard reflects on the warning signs that appeared before his own breakdown, including struggling to switch off, losing balance between work and personal life, and no longer making time for things that previously brought enjoyment or an opportunity to switch off.

“It’s not usually one dramatic moment,” Richard explains. “Often the signs build over time.”

The challenge of asking for help

The episode also explores why many solicitors still find it difficult to ask for support, even when conversations around mental health have become more visible across the profession.

In law, resilience, independence and reliability are often viewed as essential traits. While these qualities can be strengths, they can also make vulnerability feel uncomfortable or difficult to express. Richard discusses how many people working within legal environments simply continue to suffer in silence despite warning signs that something is wrong.

“The first conversation is the hardest one,” he reflects. “But once you take that first step, it becomes easier.”

Creating healthier and more respectful ways of working

Alongside Richard’s personal experience, the discussion explores the work of the Mindful Business Charter and the wider conversation around workplace culture within legal and professional services environments. The episode considers how organisations can create healthier and more sustainable ways of working through better boundaries, more respectful communication, and greater awareness of wellbeing pressures across teams.

Mindful Business Charter outlines the risk factors for mental illness and mental health crises that all employers should be aware of. These include persistent long-term stress, extended and unpredictable working hours without adequate breaks and rest, lack of sleep, and a disconnection from loved ones and other emotional supports.

Nick and Richard also discuss the emotional impact of legal work itself, including the vicarious trauma that can come from regularly dealing with difficult, emotionally charged situations and clients.

Supporting wellbeing within the profession

Throughout the conversation, there is a strong focus on the importance of recognising warning signs earlier, looking out for colleagues, and continuing to normalise conversations around mental health and wellbeing within legal life. The episode also highlights the support available through organisations such as The Solicitors’ Charity, LawCare, and initiatives like the Mindful Business Charter.

Episode 7 is a reminder that even highly capable and successful professionals can experience sudden burnout — and that support, openness and healthier workplace cultures all play an important role in creating a more sustainable profession and better mental health.
