Lorraine’s story

Lorraine is 48. She has a daughter aged 17 whom she has brought up single-handedly. She has never had any financial support from her previous partner. Her daughter was her “inspiration” to study law and qualify as a solicitor. Although her early years were very successful and she was head-hunted to her second firm, she suffered severe bullying in the workplace and fell into a deep depression. Finally forced to take sick leave and no longer able to make the minimum payments on her credit cards, the debts that she had started to run up during her training became overwhelming and she reached breaking point. On Income Support and no longer able to work, she was on the verge of having her house repossessed.

I was not suicidal but I was close to breaking point

Lorraine is one of our real success stories. She is now on a three-month work placement scheme and has been told that she is likely to be offered a permanent position at the end of it. In a wonderful “twist of fate” Lorraine will be helping others to find work in her new role. We wish her the very best of luck.

The Solicitors’ Charity helped Lorraine with financial assistance towards her crippling debt and by loaning her further monies to ensure that she was able to keep a roof over her daughter’s head.

I was ashamed to ask for help — but it was offered
