The Legal Pause: Episode 1 – Talking Wellbeing with LawCare
We’re proud to launch The Legal Pause, a new podcast from The Solicitors’ Charity exploring key issues facing the legal profession. In our first episode, Nick Gallagher is joined by Elizabeth Rimmer, Chief Executive of LawCare, one of our longest-standing partners, to discuss mental health, workplace culture, and the Latest Life in the Law report.
Supporting the legal community
LawCare is the mental health charity for the legal sector across the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Founded in 1997, it offers free, confidential support to anyone working in or around law – from solicitors and barristers to trainees, paralegals and business services professionals.
Elizabeth Rimmer, Chief Executive of LawCare shared: “Our USP is that we get it. Everyone on our support team has worked in law. When someone says they’re struggling, we understand the environment they’re in.”
LawCare also leads education, advocacy and research to drive change across the profession – tackling stigma and promoting healthier workplaces. In the podcast, Elizabeth tells us more about the origins of LawCare and how it has evolved into the organisation it is today.
Research that shapes real-world support
LawCare’s Life in the Law research has provided vital insight into mental health across the profession. The first study (2021) found 69% of legal professionals had experienced poor mental health in the past year, highlighting long hours, bullying, and low psychological safety.
These findings helped shape The Solicitors’ Charity’s own services – from new emotional wellbeing partnerships with Onebright and LawCare to professional career coaching through Renovo. The 2025 Life in the Law follow-up study reinforces the need for change: more than half of respondents planned to leave their current role within five years, and a third are considering leaving law altogether.
Working together for wellbeing
Both organisations explain what they do, and how they provide support for the legal sector, in slightly different ways. They agree that stigma and lack of awareness remain barriers to seeking help.
Elizabeth shared during The Legal Pause: “Many simply don’t know we exist, or they worry that asking for help will be seen as weakness. We need to show that speaking up is a strength.”
Nick from The Solicitors’ Charity added: “We’re independent, confidential, and here to help solicitors and their dependants rebuild stability, confidence and wellbeing.”
An award-winning partnership
The incredible partnership between The Solicitors’ Charity and LawCare has been recognised this year – it won an award for ‘Charity Collaboration of the Year’ from the Association of Charitable Organisations. To end the podcast, Nick Gallagher, CEO of The Solicitors’ Charity shared that the Charity was starting an important new scheme for firms and suppliers to get involved with, and to help with funding, called: Firm Friends.
