Mark’s Story

“Support was there when I needed it most – and it helped bring me back from a very dark place.”

When everything felt overwhelming

Mark (not his real name) first reached out to The Solicitors’ Charity during a period of intense personal difficulty four years ago. A series of life events had taken a serious toll on his emotional wellbeing and financial stability, leaving him feeling isolated and unsure of where to turn.

The emotional strain led to severe anxiety and depression, and Mark found himself struggling to cope with everyday life. With his income reduced and his confidence shaken, he felt that the situation was impossible to navigate alone.

Mark explains: “I was clinically depressed. I felt completely isolated and desperately needed someone to speak to about the crisis I was in.”

At the time, Mark was facing significant financial uncertainty alongside the emotional strain he was experiencing. The pressure to return to work before he felt ready only added to the weight he was carrying. Reaching out for help did not come easily.

He says: “I am a very proud person. Despite having a disability, I have always found it difficult to ask for support.”

A turning point

After contacting The Solicitors’ Charity, Mark was able to speak openly about his situation with someone who understood the pressures that can come with life in the law. Together, they worked through the challenges he was facing and identified the right forms of support.

The charity provided financial assistance to help ease the immediate shortfall  he was experiencing. Just as importantly, it funded talking therapy – support that Mark had not been able to access elsewhere.

Mark recalls: “That support for therapy was a godsend. My confidence came back knowing I had someone to talk to. Everything flowed from that.”

Rebuilding stability

Having the opportunity to talk through his experiences helped Mark begin to process what he had been through and start rebuilding his confidence. With the right support in place, he gradually regained a sense of stability and independence. The charity also helped him navigate the practical challenges that came with rebuilding his life, giving him the breathing space he needed to focus on recovery.

Today, Mark describes himself as being back on steadier ground. While the future still holds uncertainties, the constant fear and pressure that once overshadowed his days has eased. Looking back, he is clear about the difference the charity made at a critical moment in his life. It helped him work through difficult practical and emotional issues over a number of years.

“I don’t know how I would have got through that period without having someone to talk to.”

A message to others in the profession

Mark’s message to others in a similar position is simple, but heartfelt: “Reach out and ask for help. I know how hard that is, but I am so grateful I did.”

Mark’s story is a reminder that difficult moments can happen to anyone. Those working in a profession built around helping others can sometimes need support themselves.

At The Solicitors’ Charity, we are here to make sure solicitors, and their dependants, do not have to face those moments alone. Because sometimes the right support, at the right time, can make all the difference. If you or someone you know could benefit from support, The Solicitors’ Charity is here to help.
